MILLWALL conceded four first-half goals as they were beaten 4-1 by Hull City at the KC Stadium.
Former Den loanee Jay Simpson was among the Tigers’ scorers in a disastrous opening 45 minutes for the visitors, who simply could not cope with wave after wave of Hull attacks.
Kenny Jackett opted to match Steve Bruce’s 3-5-2 formation, selecting fit-again Paul Robinson, Shane Lowry and Karleigh Osborne in defence, but that decision backfired horribly as the Lions were exposed time and again in wide areas.
There had been warning signs as early as the eighth minute when midfielder Stephen Quinn got to the byline and cut the ball back for Robert Koren, whose shot was held at the second attempt by Maik Taylor.
But the breakthrough came just five minutes later when Koren surged from the halfway line to the edge of the penalty area before drilling into the bottom corner.
Millwall’s best chance of the first half came shortly after they had fallen behind but Darius Henderson fired tamely at keeper Ben Amos after latching onto Josh Wright’s through-ball.
And Hull doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Quinn’s lofted cross sailed over the head of Osborne and into the feet of Simpson, who took a touch before finishing into the far corner.
The Tigers added a third when Abdoulaye Faye headed in James Chester’s teasing cross, before Sone Aluko made it 4-0 with a low shot through Taylor’s legs in the 41st minute.
Jackett reverted to four in defence after half-time, switching Scott Malone to left-back and bringing on Alan Dunne for Osborne, but Ahmed Elmohamady hit the bar minutes after the restart as Hull pushed for a fifth goal.
The Lions, however, managed to get themselves on the scoresheet when Dunne’s hanging cross was headed across goal and into the far corner by Henderson in the 64th minute.
But that proved to be the visitors’ only effective attacking move of the match and it took a fine save from Taylor to prevent Aluko adding a fifth goal for Hull in the dying stages.
