MILLWALL were dumped out of the Capital One Cup after a penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of Crawley Town.

Darius Henderson and Jack Smith both saw their spot-kicks saved by visiting keeper Paul Jones before David Hunt fired in the match-winner.

The Lions were arguably fortunate to have taken the game into extra time having twice fallen behind in the 90 minutes.

Hope Akpan’s 16th-minute header put Crawley ahead before defender Darren Ward glanced home Liam Feeney’s cross to equalise shortly after.

But Nicky Adams’ superb curling effort restored the League One side’s lead and former Den favourite Gary Alexander had a goal ruled out for offside as the Reds took control.

John Akinde then spurned a glorious chance to put the game to bed when he raced clear of Millwall’s defence and brushed aside the challenge of substitute Danny Shittu but he blasted high and wide.

Shaun Batt fired in an 85-minute equaliser for Millwall, latching onto Henderson’s knock-down and burying his shot into the top corner, but Crawley deservedly triumphed in the shoot-out.
